Sheikh Hasina Verdict LIVE Updates: Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been sentenced to death for "crimes against humanity" committed during last year's student-led agitation that led to the fall of her Awami League government. Hasina, who is in exile, was tried in absentia.

The Muhammad Yunus regime heightened security across Dhaka and other areas amid sporadic violence and crude bomb attacks ahead of the Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal's highly anticipated verdict.

Sheikh Hasina said the verdict was made by a "rigged" tribunal established and presided over by an "unelected government with no democratic mandate".

"They are biased and politically motivated. In their distasteful call for the death penalty, they reveal the brazen and murderous intent of extremist figures within the interim government to remove Bangladesh's last elected prime minister, and to nullify the Awami League as a political force," she said in a statement.

"They can see that the trials conducted by the so-called International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) were never intended to achieve justice or provide any genuine insight into the events of July and August 2025. “Didn’t Work In 1971, Won’t Now”: Sheikh Hasina Aide Calls Trial “Scripted”

Mohammad Ali Arafat, the former Information Minister in Sheikh Hasina's cabinet, has said the trial was "scripted and sham".

"The country has gone to the hands of the jihadists, Yunus is heading them. We have to defeat the entire group with the help of people, politically," he told NDTV.

"They are creating narrative and drama to show to the world," he said.

"They are trying to turn Bangladesh into East Pakistan," he added.

He said Hasina's party, the Awami League, has more than 20 million active members, which is the "biggest party" in Bangladesh.

"Awami League is the reason why Bangladesh came into being. If you want to suppress this group, there will be a natural ramification," he said.

"There will be a backlash. It did not work out in 1971; it will not work out now," he said.

Sheikh Hasina Trail LIVE: Why Ex-PM Is Under Trail In Bangladesh

Bangladesh's ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is facing charges of crimes against humanity involving last year’s uprising that killed hundreds of people and ended her 15-year rule. The prosecution in a special tribunal has sought the death penalty for Hasina, exiled in India, and a former home minister, who is absconding. It did not recommend any penalty for a third suspect — a former police chief who became a state witness and pleaded guilty. Verdicts for all three are expected on Monday.

Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan face charges of crimes against humanity for the killing of hundreds of people during a student-led uprising in July and August of 2024. The United Nations in a February report said up to 1,400 may have been killed in the violence, while the country’s health adviser under the interim government said more than 800 people were killed and about 14,000 were injured. Both of them are being tried in absentia.

The verdict is set to come as local media reported new explosions of crude bombs in Dhaka, including one in front of the house of an adviser, equivalent to a Cabinet minister, on Sunday.
