In an interview with Japan's The Yomiuri Shimbun, PM Modi said a stable, predictable, and amicable bilateral relations between India and China can have a positive impact on regional and global peace and prosperity.

"Given the current volatility in world economy, it is also important for India and China, as two major economies, to work together to bring stability to the world economic order," PM Modi said in the interview published on Friday.

PM Modi's trip to China comes less than a fortnight after Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited India.

In the talks, PM Modi and Xi are expected to take stock of India-China economic ties and deliberate on steps to further normalise relations that came under severe strain following the eastern Ladakh border row.

After a gap of over seven years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in China on Saturday on a keenly watched visit that assumed greater significance in view of sudden downturn in India-US ties triggered by Washington's policies on tariff.

PM Modi is in China primarily to attend the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) on August 31 and September 1. However, his scheduled meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday has assumed greater significance in the face of Washington's tariff tussle that has impacted almost all leading economies across the world.

The 'Pashmina' shawl, made from the fine wool of the Changthangi goat in Ladakh, is valued worldwide for being light, soft, and warm. Handwoven by Kashmiri artisans, it carries a centuries-old tradition once cherished by royalty. The shawl has an ivory base with delicate floral and paisley patterns in rust, pink, and red, showing classic Kashmiri design and craftsmanship. 

It comes in a hand-painted papier-mache box decorated with floral and bird motifs, adding to its beauty and cultural value. Together, the shawl and box represent Kashmir's artistry, heritage, and timeless elegance.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi gifted a ramen bowl and chopsticks to his Japanese counterpart Shigeru Ishiba. 

The stone bowl set with silver chopsticks is a blend of Indian artistry and Japanese culinary tradition. Featuring a large brown moonstone bowl with four smaller ones and silver chopsticks, it draws inspiration from Japan's donburi and soba rituals.  The moonstone, sourced from Andhra Pradesh, glows with adularescence and symbolizes love, balance, and protection, while the base of the main bowl is Makrana marble inlaid with semi-precious stones in the traditional parchin kari style of Rajasthan.

PM Modi concluded his visit to Japan and left for China. He and and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to hold two bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the SCO summit in Tianjin on Sunday, as both nations look to strengthen ties amid global trade tensions sparked by US President Donald Trump.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday concluded his two-visit to Japan. "This visit to Japan will be remembered for the productive outcomes which will benefit the people of our nations. I thank PM Ishiba, the Japanese people and the Government for their warmth," he said.

"We went to the Training Room, Production Innovation Lab and interacted with top officials of the company. The semiconductor sector is a key area for India-Japan cooperation. In the last few years, India has made many strides in this sector. A lot of youngsters are getting associated with it as well. We seek to continue this momentum in the times to come," PM Modi said on X.

"This morning, I held an exchange of views with the governors of 16 prefectures in Japan in Tokyo. Cooperation between states and prefectures is an important pillar in the friendship between India and Japan. Therefore, at the 15th India-Japan Summit held yesterday, an initiative on this inter-regional cooperation was launched. There is great potential for cooperation in areas such as trade, innovation, and entrepreneurship, and advanced fields like startups, technology, and AI will also be beneficial to both sides," PM Modi wrote on X.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a bullet train ride with his Japanese counterpart Shigeru Ishiba on Saturday and met with Indian train drivers currently training at East Japan Railway Company. Both the Prime Ministers are heading to Japan's Sendai city. 

Japanese PM shared pictures from the ride on his X (formerly Twitter) account and wrote, "With Prime Minister Modi to Sendai. Continuing from last night, I will be with you in the car." 

They also observed the new ALFA-X train and were briefed about the bullet train by the chairman of East Japan Railway Company, also called 'JR East', the train operator. "Observed the new ALFA-X train from the window, with an explanation provided by the chairman of JR East," wrote Japanese PM on X as he shared pictures from within the train.

India and Japan on Friday laid a strong foundation for "a new and golden chapter" in the Special Strategic and Global Partnership, setting a roadmap for the next decade and advancing cooperation across eight pillars to give new vigour to the ties.

The two countries agreed adopted a Joint Declaration on Security Cooperation, which elevates the defence and security ties to the next level, taking into account the contemporary geopolitical realities and security configurations in the region; and

Japan pledged Friday to invest $68 billion in India during a visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Tokyo, as the two countries agreed to deepen security ties.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to secure investment pledges from Japan of more than ¥10 trillion ($68 billion) during his two-day trip to the country, people familiar with the matter said, as he seeks to bolster the economy against soaring US tariffs.

The two sides are also expected to sign an economic security pact covering cooperation on semiconductors, critical minerals, and artificial intelligence, the officials in New Delhi said, asking not to be identified to discuss matters that are still private.

Japan's trade negotiator Ryosei Akazawa cancelled a visit to the US at the last minute on Thursday. The move threatens to delay finalisation of a $550 billion investment package offered by Japan to the US in order to ease punitive US tariffs.

New Delhi and Tokyo will discuss a broad range of geopolitical and geo-economic issues during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's two-day Japan visit, according to India's Ambassador to Japan Sibi George.

During his August 29–30 visit, PM Modi will hold his first formal bilateral talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.

The two leaders are expected to review the progress of the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership, focusing on key sectors including defence and security, trade and investment, digital technology, climate action, and innovation.
