Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is in Japan for a two day visit, is set to address the 15th India-Japan Joint Economic Forum shortly.

From Japan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to China on a two-day visit to attend the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Tianjin on August 31 and September 1.

"I am confident that my visits to Japan and China would further our national interests and priorities, and contribute to building fruitful cooperation in advancing regional and global peace, security, and sustainable development," he said.

Taking to social media platform X, PM Modi wrote in a post, “Deeply touched by the warmth and affection of the Indian community here in Tokyo. Their commitment to preserving our cultural roots while contributing meaningfully to Japanese society is truly commendable. In a few hours from now, will be interacting with a group of business leaders with a focus on adding vigour to India-Japan trade and investment ties.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to secure investment pledges from Japan of more than ¥10 trillion ($68 billion) during his two-day trip to the country, people familiar with the matter said, as he seeks to bolster the economy against soaring US tariffs.

The two sides are also expected to sign an economic security pact covering cooperation on semiconductors, critical minerals, and artificial intelligence, the officials in New Delhi said, asking not to be identified to discuss matters that are still private.

Modi said in a statement Thursday that the two sides will focus on “shaping the next phase” of their partnership. “We would endeavor to give new wings to our collaboration, expand scope and ambition of our economic and investment ties, and advance cooperation in new and emerging technologies, including AI and semiconductors,” he said in a statement. New Delhi and Tokyo will discuss a broad range of geopolitical and geo-economic issues during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's two-day Japan visit, according to India's Ambassador to Japan Sibi George.

During his August 29–30 visit, PM Modi will hold his first formal bilateral talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.
