New Delhi:

Democratic leader Jon Ossoff has been re-elected from Georgia in this year's midterms, making him the youngest sitting Senator. The 39-year-old managed to hold a key seat in the elections, leading to speculation about a potential 2028 presidential bid.

Who Is Jon Ossoff?

Before entering politics, Ossoff ran a documentary film production firm, focusing particularly on corruption. He also served as an aide to civil rights icon John Lewis.

In 2021, Ossoff flipped a Republican-held Senate seat in Georgia after winning a runoff election. In this year's campaign, he pulled in more than $100 million in fundraising.

He has drawn comparisons to former US president Barack Obama due to his oratory skills, age, and progressive-centrist policies.

During his tenure, Ossoff has passed legislation to tackle the opioid epidemic, prevent fentanyl trafficking, strengthen health care facilities, and improve mental health services for veterans.

He has also led bipartisan investigations into the mistreatment of military families living in privatised housing, abuse of children in foster care, and corruption in Federal prisons, among other issues.

Ossoff lives in Atlanta with his wife, Dr Alisha Kramer, and two daughters.

When Jon Ossoff Grilled CIA Director John Ratcliffe

Last year, Ossoff made headlines when he grilled CIA chief John Ratcliffe over a security breach where a journalist was invited into a Signal group chat of national security officials and read their conversations about planning airstrikes in Yemen.

Dubbed Signalgate, Ossoff had called the incident an “embarrassment” during a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing.

"This is utterly unprofessional. There's been no apology," he said.

Ossoff ripped into Ratcliffe after the CIA director answered “I don't recall” to several questions about the content of the Signal conversation.

“Director Ratcliffe, surely you prepared for this hearing today…You are part of a group of principals, senior echelons of the US government, and now a widely publicised breach of sensitive information,” Ossoff said.

The Senator emphasised that there was no recognition of the “gravity” of the error. He warned Ratcliffe that his testimony would be measured against the full transcript of the chat.
