Cairo: Egypt's state news agency says attackers riding on a motorcycle hurled a hand grenade at a police checkpoint near a famous Cairo palace, lightly wounding one of the guards.

The MENA report says the attack happened early on Monday near el-Quba palace in eastern Cairo. It says unknown assailants threw a hand grenade at the checkpoint and fled.

Cairo Radio, however, says the explosion lightly wounded two guards. The discrepancy in the reported number of wounded could not immediately be reconciled.

MENA says security officials and investigators are at the scene, searching the area.

The imposing and el-Quba is among the most splendid of Egypt's royal palaces, and was once the residence of the country's last monarch, King Farouk.
