Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, in his Independence Day speech, reflected on India’s freedom struggle and said the vision of the freedom fighters extended beyond ending foreign rule to achieving freedom from poverty, discrimination, unemployment, injustice and fear. Kharge highlighted the contributions of successive Congress governments and leaders in nation-building, while accusing the present government of failing to address the concerns of youth, poor and weaker sections. He also defended the right to peaceful protest, raised concerns over democratic institutions and called for an India based on equality, dignity, opportunity and justice for all.
