Army chief General MM Naravane today said that the forces under his command have always been apolitical and will remain so in the future in keeping with a hallowed oath taken by every soldier to hold the Constitution above everything else. The statement came days after his predecessor, General Bipin Rawat, sparked off a huge row by purportedly criticising political leaders who he claimed had incited violent protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act over the last few weeks. "The Army has always been apolitical and will remain apolitical. When we enroll in the Army, we take an oath to follow the Constitution and keep that above all," General Naravane, who was appointed to the position on Tuesday, told NDTV.
