US House Speaker Mike Johnson has expressed disappointment over major Democratic gains in the 2026 midterm elections, acknowledging that Republicans faced a difficult battle to retain their congressional majority. Speaking at an election night event in Shreveport, Louisiana, Johnson said it appeared the historic trend of a president's party losing ground in midterm elections would continue. Democrats have flipped control of the Senate after victories in Republican strongholds, including Kansas, Texas, Iowa and South Carolina, and are also projected to win a majority in the House. Johnson warned Democrats against turning Congress into a “circus” through investigations of the Trump administration, vowing that House Republicans would resist what he called an “insurgent socialist movement.”
