UPI MDR Rules: Government Moves To Stop Merchants Passing Cost To Customers
The government is set to work with payment aggregators and platforms to ensure merchants do not pass the UPI merchant discount rate (MDR) on to customers. Banks will monitor compliance daily from October 15. Sources say the 0.4% MDR on UPI transactions above ₹2,000 is unlikely to slow digital payments or trigger a return to cash.
