For millions of Indians, paying by UPI has become almost automatic. Scan the QR code, enter the amount and walk away. But from October 15, a new cost will enter the system for some higher-value UPI payments.

The Modi government, however, does not want that cost to reach customers. Hence, the Centre is collaborating with payment aggregators to ensure that merchants do not pass the charges (Merchant Discount Rate) on transactions to end customers. Banks have also been instructed to ensure and the compliance will be monitored on a daily basis from October 15, sources told NDTV.
