El Niño is showing signs of strengthening, with sea surface temperatures in the key Niño 3.4 region around 2.1°C above average and the atmosphere beginning to respond. Forecast models suggest the warming could intensify through the coming months, raising the possibility of an exceptionally strong El Niño. But scientists are not yet calling it a “monster El Niño.” Events such as 1997-98 and 2015-16 remain benchmarks for extreme El Niño conditions.
