Stranded Whale Freed In Baltic Sea, But Long Journey To Safety Remains

A humpback whale stranded for days in shallow waters near Timmendorfer Strand has finally swum free after an intensive rescue effort. The marine mammal had been stuck on an underwater sandbank in the Baltic Sea, prompting urgent intervention from rescue teams. Using excavators, crews dug an escape channel that allowed the whale to move overnight toward deeper waters in Lübeck Bay. Marine biologist Robert Marc Lehmann called it progress, but warned the whale is still not out of danger.
