Scientists on a month-long deep-sea expedition off Argentina’s coast documented a rare giant phantom jellyfish. The Argentinian-led mission aboard the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s R/V Falkor explored deep-sea ecosystems from Buenos Aires to Tierra del Fuego. Researchers believe they identified at least 28 suspected new marine species during the journey. The expedition also revealed active methane seeps supporting deep-sea life. Footage from the mission highlights both extraordinary biodiversity and concerning human-made debris.
