Temporary cremation ghats are being set up in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, amid a rise in deaths due to COVID-19. Over 6,000 deaths have been recorded in the city since the pandemic began. A lot of people, following Hindu religious beliefs, come to Varanasi to perform the funeral of their loved ones. Shopkeepers in the city say people coming to buy material for rituals has increased ten-fold amid the pandemic.
