A congressional hearing that was supposed to center on President Donald Trump's 2027 military budget proposal has entered its fifth hour, with Democrats and Republicans oscillating between praise and condemnation for Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Much of the hearing has been focused on the Trump administration's war with Iran, while Hegseth has also faced questions from Republicans and Democrats over Hegseth's firing of top military leaders. Some Democratic lawmakers also questioned Trump's fitness to serve as president. Democratic Congressman Pat Ryan of New York criticized Hegseth over the deaths of six American soldiers who were stationed in Kuwait and killed by an Iranian drone. Ryan pressed Hegseth on whether intelligence showed the location was high on Iran’s target list and was indefensible from aerial attack.
