The Congress has stepped up its offensive against the Centre, protesting inside and outside Parliament over the proposed G Ramji Bill, which it says seeks to repeal and replace MGNREGA. Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi alleged that removing Mahatma Gandhi’s name reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s hostility to Gandhian ideals and the rights of the poor, calling MGNREGA a living embodiment of Ram Swaraj. The protests have intensified after a Delhi court declined to take cognisance of the Enforcement Directorate’s prosecution complaint in the National Herald case. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge termed the development a vindication and accused the BJP of misusing central agencies, while the BJP defended the bill as a substantive reform and dismissed Congress’s allegations as political theatrics.
