How much hypocrisy is too much hypocrisy? The answer is, in politics, it is limitless. On Friday, when no female journalists were present at the press conference by the acting foreign minister of Afghanistan in Delhi, it drew rightful outrage across the country. Leaders from all opposition parties flayed the Modi government for betraying its own slogan of "Naari Shakti." They lamented how women were invisibilized and demanded immediate reparations. But on the very same day, in another part of India, a young woman was brutalized. The 23-year-old medical student was gang-raped in West Bengal's Durgapur, and hours later, even as arrests were being made, the Chief Minister of West Bengal asked, "How was she out at 12:30 am?"
The big question on The Buck Stops Here: Between the Afghan press conference and the rape and shaming of a woman in West Bengal, is feminist outrage to be expressed only with caveats?
