Petitioner MR Venkatesh told NDTV that the dispute over lighting the Karthigai Deepam lamp at Thirupparankundram is rooted in century-old court rulings that consistently upheld devotees' rights. He said the hill itself is sacred to Hindus and past judgments - including a 1923 ruling affirmed by the Privy Council and a 1996 Madras HC order - allowed lamp lighting with a buffer from the dargah.
