At least 10 residential buildings in Kolkata will be pulled down, a week after they partially collapsed during tunnelling for an underground rail line from Esplanade in the heart of the city to Kolkata's busiest railway station, Sealdah. On August 31, Chundee, the tunnel boring machine (TBM) of the East West Metro had run into an aquifer or water bearing bed of soil. The water had poured out and the soil had settled, leading to the buildings to fall. Some 600 people have been left homeless all of a sudden. East West Metro has brought in experts from Hong Kong and Singapore to try and find a solution to the problem that many say is unprecedented.
