Assam has rolled out an ambitious scheme to develop around 40 lakh women SHG members as Rural Micro Entrepreneurs or "Lakhpati Baideo (sister)" and ensure an annual income of Rs 1 lakh for each member ahead of the 2024 general election. The new scheme comes with a population and girl child education rider and around Rs 4,000 crore will be spent for this. There are three preconditions - the women beneficiaries from the General and OBC beneficiaries should not have more than three children, and those from the SC/ST/Moran/Matak/Tea tribes should not have more than four children. The SHG members with a girl child should enroll her/them in school if they have attained the age. NDTV's Ratnadip Choudhury explains.
