The vehicle scrappage policy will help phase out unfit and polluting vehicles. Commercial vehicles more than 15 years old will have to be scrapped if they don't clear fitness and emission tests. Similarly, private vehicles more than 20 years old will have to be scrapped if they don't clear fitness and emission tests. Apart from a turnover boost for Indian automotive industry, the policy is also aimed at promotion of new technologies and a reduction in India's huge crude oil import bill.
