Nepal Floods Explained: How A Natural Dam Burst Triggered A Devastating Surge
A devastating flash flood struck Nepal on August 26, after ice, rocks, mud and boulders collapsed near the Nepal-China border and crashed into the Thame Khola, creating a natural dam. When the ice-and-rock barrier collapsed, a deadly surge of mud, boulders and water swept downstream, hitting Timure and Syaurbesi before moving towards Nuwakot. The G216 National Highway was also turned into a major impact zone. Nepal is now battling the aftermath, with 392 people dead and nearly 600 still missing.
