Nepal Floods: Climate Change Raises Risk Of Himalayan Disasters

The devastating August 26 floods in Nepal and neighbouring China have killed more than 1,000 people and left thousands missing. A collapse of bedrock and glacial ice sent massive torrents of water and debris through Himalayan river systems, destroying roads, bridges, buildings and hydropower infrastructure. Climate experts warn that rising temperatures, accelerating glacier loss and thawing permafrost are increasing the risk of cascading disasters across the Hindu Kush Himalayas, while calling for stronger early-warning systems and safer infrastructure planning.
