Several local residents played a crucial role in saving lives on Wednesday morning when a devastating fire ripped through a bed-and-breakfast in South Delhi's Malviya Nagar. The blaze claimed 21 lives and injured 25 others, including several foreign nationals. Even before firefighters reached the scene, locals sprang into action-spreading mattresses on the ground to cushion those jumping from the building in a desperate bid to escape the flames.
