The Supreme Court has warned the Election Commission of India (ECI) that it could draw an adverse inference against the poll body over its inability to trace the video recording of the 2023 vote counting in Karnataka’s Sringeri Assembly constituency. The court has directed the ECI to produce whatever records are available at the next hearing on February 15, 2027. The case concerns a dispute between Congress leader TD Rajegowda and BJP candidate DN Jeevaraj. Rajegowda initially won the seat by 201 votes in 2023, but a recount of postal ballots led to Jeevaraj being declared the winner in May 2026. Rajegowda has challenged the revised result, alleging that the recount exceeded the Karnataka High Court’s directions. The Supreme Court has allowed him to continue as an MLA while his plea remains pending.
