Barely 6 km away from Dana Majhi's home in Kalahandi, Odisha, is the Narkundi primary healthcare centre. This is where Dana Majhi took his wife for a check-up when she first fell sick. There was no doctor to attend to her then. Eight months later, when she succumbed to tuberculosis at Kalahandi district headquarter hospital, Dana Majhi carried her dead body for 10 km on his shoulders as he had no money to afford a hearse.
