Last night, as news broke of the cold-blooded murder of Bengaluru journalist Gauri Lankesh, a chill ran down many spines. Ms Lankesh was murdered at her home in Bangalore, shot dead by unidentified gunmen at point-blank range. The police are investigating and must get to the truth. But here is what we do know: Ms Lankesh was an outspoken and a fearless journalist who was a fierce critic of the extreme right wing. In the last 24 hours before her death, Ms Lankesh had posted on the Rohingya refugee crisis, attacked the central government and criticised demonetisation. Her last column in her Kannada weekly was about child deaths at a Gorakhpur hospital. Today, as Ms Lankesh received a state funeral, around the country thousands of journalists came out to protest her murder.
