Illegal immigration in Mumbai has become structural and self-perpetuating, placing severe pressure on housing, sanitation, healthcare and transport systems, according to a recent report. Migrant settlements are largely concentrated in areas such as Govandi, Mankhurd, Kurla and fringe slums, intensifying overcrowding and strain on civic infrastructure. Speaking to NDTV, History and Policy expert, JK Bajaj said migration should not be viewed as a political tool, arguing instead that it must be understood through the lens of long-term civilisational and demographic change in metro cities.
