IIT-Bombay Student Suicide: Protesters Seek Probe, Director's Resignation, Mental Health Measures

Students at IIT Bombay are protesting following the death of second-year BTech student Sahil Wakode, who was found dead in his hostel room on September 18. The protesters are demanding an independent inquiry into his death, accountability from the institute administration and an inquiry into four student suicide cases reported on campus over the past year. The students have submitted a 10-point list of demands, including greater student representation in academic and disciplinary committees, mental-health measures, an independent inquiry, compensation for Wakode’s family and the resignation of the institute’s Director and Dean. IIT Bombay maintains that no disciplinary action had been initiated against Wakode and that he had been counselled after the examination incident.
