Greece Became First Nation to Use Dedicated Satellites for Wildfire Detection

As Greece prepares for another devastating wildfire season, the country has launched a first-of-its-kind AI-powered satellite system to detect fires from space. Four thermal imaging satellites can identify blazes as small as four meters wide and send near-real-time alerts to emergency responders, helping authorities act before fires spread. The EU-backed project is part of a broader effort to strengthen Europe's technological independence while improving disaster response, climate monitoring, border security and urban planning.
