Delhi Police Joint Commissioner Madhur Verma told NDTV that the violence near Turkman Gate erupted during a court-ordered encroachment removal drive carried out by the MCD in the early hours to minimise inconvenience to commuters. He said multiple peace committee meetings were held in advance, including with local leaders and mosque clerics, to clarify that no religious structure would be touched. Despite this, a small group of misled youths resorted to stone-pelting, prompting a graded police response using tear gas. Five people were arrested, and police are examining CCTV footage, bodycam visuals and social media posts to probe possible instigation and conspiracy. Verma said the situation is now peaceful and warned against falling prey to rumours, stressing that strict action will be taken against any further violence.
