Sindoor or vermilion is a precious marker for married women across India, and on Vijaya Dashami women at Durga Puja pandals and temples daubed each other with a dash of the sacred reddish-orange powder to celebrate their marital life and its longevity. The traditional Sindoor Khela at these puja precincts followed the ritual 'Baran' -- which is a heartfelt offering of sweets and Sindoor to Goddess Durga, and an emotional farewell to Her. It marks the goddess's return to her heavenly abode, with the promise of coming back next year. Joyous scenes played out at Durga Puja pandals in Kolkata, and other locations across West Bengal and Assam.
