Disability Jokes Aren't Funny: Sensitivity Vs Free Speech?
The Supreme Court on Monday sought the presence of five social media influencers, including "India's Got Latent" host Samay Raina, on a plea of an NGO which alleged that they ridiculed persons with a rare disorder Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) on their show.In the last many years, we as a society have made gains in attempting to use language that is respectful, specially to make us an inclusive society. It is important to build on those gains, not hurt, harm people with language. But how does one build that sensitivity amongst people in a society that often tends to normalise such disparaging language?
