Democrat Chris Pappas won New Hampshire's US Senate race on Tuesday (November 3), defeating Republican John Sununu's bid to return to the chamber after two decades, calling the result "a wake-up call for billionaires" and vowing to fight for a change in direction in Washington. In his victory speech to his supporters in Manchester, Pappas said the result was a repudiation of "corporate special interests and billionaires" and praised what he described as a people-powered campaign funded by more than 200,000 individual donors and no corporate PAC money. Pappas will become the first openly gay man elected to the Senate, and his win keeps the seat in Democratic hands after Senator Jeanne Shaheen's retirement following 18 years in office. New Hampshire has long been considered a swing state because of its moderate electorate, and Republicans had targeted Shaheen’s seat in their drive to retain their Senate majority.z
