Congress-SP Face-Off In UP: Is Seat Sharing Driving A Wedge?

"UP ke ladke" or "UP ke ladake"? A public spat between SP MLA Ashu Malik and Congress MP Imran Masood at a DISHA meeting in Saharanpur has put the spotlight on growing tensions between the two INDIA bloc allies.

While the argument was ostensibly over issues to be discussed at the meeting, the timing has raised bigger questions about the alliance ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.

Congress leaders, including Imran Masood and UP in-charge Rajendra Pal Gautam, are pushing for a larger share of seats, with Congress seeking around 150 seats. The SP is reportedly looking at a much smaller allocation of around 70-80 seats.

With both parties preparing for the crucial seat-sharing negotiations, is the Saharanpur spat just an isolated clash—or a sign of deeper trouble in the Congress-SP alliance?
