The Calcutta High Court today ordered the West Bengal government to stop payment of a monthly stipend to thousands of imams and muezzins in the state. Imams and muezzins are people who organise prayers in a mosque. Since April last year, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's government had been paying more than 30,000 imams in the state Rs. 2500 per month and over 15,000 muezzins Rs. 1500.
