Long queues formed at banks across the country today as millions rushed to deposit and swap Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, banned in a surprise announcement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to check black or untaxed money. Tax officials are conducting large and simultaneous raids in four different cities including Delhi and Mumbai to find people hoarding large amounts of the 500 and 1,000 rupee notes that can no longer be used for transactions. But is the move leaving room for more efforts to launder money? Is it inconveniencing poorer sections of society? And where do those with no bank accounts go?
