The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has claimed victory in Bangladesh’s first general election since the 2024 uprising that ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Party officials said the BNP crossed the 151-seat majority mark in the 350-member Parliament, positioning it to form the next government, though final results are yet to be officially declared by the Election Commission. BNP chief Tarique Rahman, who returned from 17 years in self-exile in London, called the outcome a mandate for democracy, inclusive development and constitutional reform. Meanwhile, the Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance raised concerns over delayed results, despite securing a significant number of seats and emerging as a strong opposition bloc.
