Conrad Sangma, chief of the National People's Party backed by allies including the BJP is all set to be the next Chief Minister of Meghalaya. Accompanied by his alliance partners, Mr Conrad staked claim to form the next government where the Congress had emerged as the largest single party with 21 members. But the Congress found the regional players tilting towards the National Peoples' Party, or NPP, which won 19 seats in the just-concluded assembly elections. Mr Sangma and the BJP's Himanta Biswa Sarma had pitched for the invite to form the government with backing of 34 legislators.
