Heavy rainfall in Kolkata has disrupted transport ahead of Durga Puja, affecting flights, trains and roads. IndiGo warned of diversions and delays, while Eastern Railway cancelled some trains due to waterlogging. Travellers should check updates and allow extra time
Kolkata's Durga Puja rush has run into travel woes after heavy rainfall on Monday, 22 September, disrupted transport links and prompted an airline advisory. With the five-day celebration due to begin on 28 September, both residents and visitors heading to the City of Joy were advised to check travel plans and allow extra time. IndiGo on Tuesday issued a travel advisory warning that some routes into Kolkata had been affected by torrential rain, resulting in temporary diversions and blocks. Kolkata airport officials said that, so far, only one Kolkata-bound flight from Pune was diverted to Bhubaneswar at 3 am. Other scheduled services were operating normally, the officials added.

The airline urged passengers to monitor flight status before leaving for the airport and to plan for possible delays caused by waterlogging and slow road traffic. In its post on X, IndiGo wrote: "Travel Advisory. Some routes across Kolkata have been impacted by heavy rain, leading to temporary blocks or diversions. We recommend planning your journey accordingly and leaving with a bit of extra time in hand." The advisory continued: "Please keep a tab on your flight status via our app or website before heading out. Our teams are working proactively to reduce any inconvenience and help you on your way. Thank you for your patience. We are here with you, every step of the way."
Rail services were also affected. A press release from Eastern Railway confirmed the cancellation of the Hazarduari Express, train number 13113, and the Sealdah to Jangipur Express, train number 13177, owing to severe waterlogging. Train services in the Sealdah South section were suspended after tracks became inundated. Howrah station and yards at Sealdah South, including several car sheds, were reported waterlogged, causing disruption to operations.
Passengers travelling to Kolkata for Durga Puja are advised to check the latest updates from airlines, rail operators and airport authorities, to allow additional travel time, and to consider alternative routes where possible. Travellers should also be prepared for local delays due to waterlogged roads and to follow instructions from local authorities.
If you plan to travel to Kolkata, monitor official airline and railway channels for real-time information and contact your carrier or booking agent for assistance.
