When we check into a hotel, we expect a set of basic amenities to make the stay comfortable. Fresh towels, a small selection of toiletries and a kettle or coffee maker for quick convenience are all part of the standard setup in most rooms. But a viral video shared on X by user @HustleBitch_ has raised an unexpected question about how these appliances can be used other than what they are meant for. The clip shows TikTok creator @tarawoodcox11 demonstrating a travel “hack” that involves washing underwear in a hotel coffee machine, a claim that has stunned many viewers.

In the video, the influencer begins by saying, “I'm about to show you the coolest trick ever.” She explains that the method is meant for situations when a traveller suddenly realises they don't have enough underwear. Standing next to a hotel coffee maker, she says, “If you are travelling and you didn't pack enough underwear and you are like, what will you wear tomorrow, every room has a coffee pot thing in it.” She then demonstrates the step-by-step process: placing her underwear where coffee grounds normally sit, closing the lid and hitting brew. “And you press brew and it puts scorching hot water through it,” she says. She adds that she uses a hair dryer afterward to finish drying the garment.

Later in the clip, she claims the idea is not new, saying, “I did not realize how many people already knew this hack. I learnt it years ago from a friend that was a flight attendant.”

The post quickly went viral and several users reacted to the method.

One user wrote, “I'm at the point where I don't want to Fly or stay at hotels any more. At all.”

Another user wrote, “Seriously, that's beyond gross! Thinking about all the times I've trusted those hotel coffee makers makes my skin crawl. It's crazy how little hotels clean those things between guests, and knowing someone's been running underwear through them? No thanks! From now on, I'm definitely packing my own travel coffee setup. It's way safer and way less disgusting. Honestly, it makes you realize how important it is to be cautious about even the smallest things when traveling.”

A third user commented, “This hack is disgusting and selfish. Many flight attendants say it's an old rumor, but hotel coffee makers are rarely deep-cleaned between guests. Just wash in the sink and hang to dry, much safer for everyone.”

“So soaking your underwear in the ice bucket with shampoo and hot water doesn't work?” wrote another user.

“Absolutely disgusting! Because can, doesn't mean should, especially without considering next, unsuspecting, hotel guest! I've used hotel kettle for all types of food purposes, boiling water to clean, but never tainted actual kettle with potentially harmful bacteria and viruses.”
