Icelandair is investigating one of its pilots after a Boeing 757 was flown at a low altitude over the town of Vestmannaeyjar on Saturday, April 11, without the airline's knowledge or permission. The aircraft was operating a scheduled flight from Frankfurt to Keflavik when the pilot, who was on his final flight with the airline, carried out a sightseeing flyover of his childhood home in the Westman Islands.

Unauthorised Flyover During Scheduled Flight
According to reports, the pilot deviated from standard flight operations to fly low over Vestmannaeyjar. The move was not authorised by Icelandair and was carried out without prior approval from the company. The flight was a regular passenger service, and the low-altitude flyover did not form part of the planned route.
Airline Calls Incident A Serious Matter
Commenting on the incident, Icelandair's Chief Flight Officer Linda Gunnarsdóttir said the airline is taking the matter seriously and is reviewing it internally.
“This is just a very serious matter that we will look into here internally. It's just the case in aviation that everything is very rigid in work processes, checklists and other things like that, what we do in normal passenger flights, and it doesn't fall within that framework.”

Passenger Information Still Unclear
Gunnarsdóttir said she expects that passengers may have been informed about the sightseeing flight, but added that she cannot confirm this at present. She also said she is unable to comment on the consequences for the pilot at this time, noting that the matter is still under consideration by the company.
