When you travel, the hardest part is rarely the destination itself. It is deciding where to eat, which route to take, or which spot is actually worth your time. New cities can feel exciting yet overwhelming, especially when plans change on the go. Google Maps is now trying to simplify this part of the journey. It has launched a new AI-powered feature called 'Ask Maps' in India and the United States, designed to help users plan and explore through simple, conversational questions.

Google Maps Launches Ask Maps AI Feature In The US And India

Google announced the rollout of Ask Maps on its official social media channels, calling it one of the biggest upgrades to the platform in more than a decade. According to the company, the feature is "fundamentally changing what a map can do" by answering complex, real-world questions that were earlier difficult to solve through basic searches. Ask Maps taps into Google Maps' vast database of over 300 million locations and insights from more than 500 million contributors globally, combining reviews, photos, traffic data, and Popular Times to deliver personalised results.

Instead of typing queries like "restaurants near me," users can now ask detailed questions through text or voice. The responses appear with a customised map showing relevant places, routes, estimated travel times, and quick options to start navigation, save locations, or share plans with others. The tool also supports follow-up questions, allowing users to refine their plans without starting a new search.

How Travellers Can Use Ask Maps

To use Ask Maps, users need to update Google Maps on their mobile device and sign in to their Google account. A new Ask Maps button appears under the search bar. Tapping it opens a chat-style interface where questions can be typed or spoken. Once the query is submitted, the AI processes live data such as traffic conditions, local reviews, and saved preferences to generate tailored suggestions. Google has confirmed that conversation history can be viewed and deleted, giving users control over how the feature is used.

Google-Approved Prompts Users Can Try

To showcase how Ask Maps works best when users describe context, mood, timing, and preferences, Google has shared a set of approved prompts that travellers can try straight away.

One suggested prompt focuses on planning a date night with specific conditions: "I'm going out on a date tonight and need ideas - no overhyped places. It should be in between home and work, have a romantic vibe, good food, and have a cool lounge nearby for after."

For those planning a quiet solo outing, Google shared another example: "I'm taking myself on a solo date. Where's a good bar within 1 mile that's not too busy? No trivia or live music, dark booths, good for reading a book."

Photography enthusiasts can use Ask Maps to plan shots based on sunlight and location: "I want to take a photo of the NYC skyline [insert place of your choice]. Based on the sun's position right now, suggest a rooftop or park where the sun will be behind the camera, not blinding me."

The feature also works well for fitness and leisure activities, including scenic routes: "I want to walk/run from the French Quarter to the Low Battery [insert route you want to explore] this evening. Create a route that hits the most 'scenic' spots. Time it so I arrive at the Low Battery right at sunset."

For longer trips, Google suggests open-ended planning questions such as: "Inspire me with some ideas for my three day trip to Boston [insert your place of travel]."

These prompts show how Ask Maps goes beyond basic navigation to factor in vibe, weather, crowd levels, and timing, helping users make more informed travel decisions.
