Visva-Bharati Vice-chancellor Bidyut Chakraborty has said that the university will not restrain itself from taking legally endorsed steps to reclaim land held "illegally" by Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen in its Santiniketan campus.

Visva-Bharati University Vice-Chancellor Bidyut Chakraborty courted controversy Saturday when a video circulated on social media purportedly showed him blaming a section of teachers for not doing enough to prevent incidents of theft in different departments of the varsity.

Agitating students of Visva-Bharati University in Santiniketan, who have launched a sit-in near the official residence of Vice-Chancellor Bidyut Chakraborty, on Tuesday allegedly stopped his vehicle when it came out of the quarters.

Confirming that Vice-Chancellor Bidyut Chakraborty is “under siege” due to the ongoing agitation by a section of students, Visva-Bharati University on Monday temporarily suspended the admission process for undergraduate and postgraduate courses, a notice said.

An organisation of the teachers of Visva-Bharati on Wednesday alleged that its Vice-Chancellor Prof Bidyut Chakraborty made baseless comments against economist Amartya Sen that the Nobel laureate urged him to stop hawker eviction drive from near his Santiniketan residence and introduced himself as a "Bharat Ratna" during the phone call.

Under fire from various quarters for his comment that Rabindranath Tagore was "an outsider" in Shantiniketan, Visva-Bharati Vice-Chancellor Prof Bidyut Chakraborty on Friday apologised for the comment but insisted that it was misinterpreted.
