As Karnataka Heads For Another Drought, Farmer Family Struggles To Repay Loan

Mandya district in Karnataka is traditionally a lush area, irrigated by water from the Krishna Raja Sagar dam. But this is the second consecutive year of drought, and no water is being released for irrigation now. The water level in the dam is just over 80 feet -- compared to the usual 100 to 110 feet level at this time of year.

Karnataka on Monday stopped release of Cauvery water from the Krishna Raja Sagar dam citing depleted storage, hours after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh made it clear that only the Cauvery River Authority can review its order directing the state to release 9,000 cusecs to Tamil Nadu.

Politics over the Cauvery water issue between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu turned violent this afternoon, with pro-Karnataka activists stoning Rapid Action Force personnel who are posted around the Krishna Raja Sagar (KRS) reservoir. Protesters are also trying to force their way into the dam area. Police have arrested G Madegowda, a farmer leader.
