Karnataka government not to spend for poojas for rains, says Minister

Facing flak over the move to invoke divine blessings for rains to help the state reeling under drought, Karnataka Muzrai Minister Kota Srinivas Poojari said on Tuesday the expenditure for special pujas planned in over 34,000 temples would be met by collecting funds from devotees.

A public interest litigation (PIL) was filed in the Karnataka High Court on Wedneday seeking a direction to state government and Muzrai (Religious Endowment) department to stop poojas being performed to appease the rain god in the wake of severe drought faced by the state.

Karnataka is staring at its worst drought in 42 years and its government has asked all the 34,000 temples in the parched state to conduct a special pooja seeking rain. At about Rs 5000 each, the special prayers will cost Rs 17 crore.
