The new Assam Cattle Preservation Bill, 2021, if passed by the state Assembly where it was placed today, will replace a 1950 law. It is aimed primarily at stopping the movement of cattle from other parts of the country into Assam and vice-versa.

The government is planning to amend an earlier order on banning cattle trade for slaughter that had hurt the livestock economy and threatened the meat industry in the country, informed sources said on Thursday.

The opposition to the government's cattle trade rule has reached the Supreme Court, which asked the NDA government today to respond on the contentions of several petitions. A Hyderabad-based organisation and two others filed petitions earlier this month, saying the rule violates fundamental rights to livelihood, freedom of religion and food choice.

Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today said the Centre's rule on cattle trade has nothing to do with state rules on animal slaughter. The rule, which bans sale of cattle for slaughter in animal markets, has triggered widespread protests in southern states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, and in the northeast, where beef is a staple.
