She was killed by an IIT student

Nineteen-year old Affy - as she was called by her friends and family was brutally murdered by a 34-year old IIT student. He has allegedly confessed to killing her because she didn’t welcome his interest in her.

Students from the Northeast say they’re tired of voicing the same concerns: that they’re discriminated against, and treated like foreigners in their own country. The police claim that the 34-year old murderer was a pervert and a maniac. In the days before the murder, the student's behaviour came close to that of a stalker's. In entries in his diary, and on his computer, he wrote repeatedly about his longing to get married. He also bought earrings, watches and teddy bears as gifts for his future partner. (NDTV Photo)

According to the police, he managed to speak to her during Diwali festivities at their apartment block in Munirka, South Delhi. On Saturday evening, he entered her room. His diary suggests that he expected Affy to respond favourably to his advances. When she tried to scream for help, he strangled her. He then held her face over the gas stove, hoping the burn marks would destroy the signs of strangling.
