The SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) achieved a milestone as the first batch of students from the institute graduated from the Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai, on March 3, 2026, with a Diploma in Information Technology and Cyber Security. A total of 350 officer cadets were awarded diplomas under the unique academic partnership between SRMIST and the OTA. Twenty-nine of the graduates were female cadets, and 321 were male. The graduating class had 16 rank holders among them, demonstrating the academic distinction of the batch. This initiative reflects SRMIST's commitment and contribution to national capacity-building via high-impact specialised academic programmes that align with contemporary strategic and technological priorities. The specially curated programme was instituted under a Memorandum of Understanding between SRMIST and OTA.

The one-year diploma integrates technological competence with military training. As modern-day warfare tactics continue to evolve, programmes like this are designed to equip future military leaders with structured knowledge in cutting-edge information technology, data protection and cyber security domains, strengthening the nation's digital warfighting and cyber resilience capabilities.

The Diploma in Information Technology and Cyber Security, offered by the SRM Faculty of Science and Humanities, focuses on fundamentals of information technology, secure systems design, cyber hygiene, network security and incident response. Up-and-coming sectors such as artificial intelligence applications, cyber warfare, and information assurance are also a part of the curriculum. The course delivery features classroom instruction, exercises, projects, laboratory work and continuous assessments designed around realistic operational scenarios. The diploma was designed to accommodate the demanding schedule of officer cadets at OTA, ensuring both flexibility and academic rigour. Experienced SRMIST faculty members and technical experts delivered the course curriculum in coordination with OTA authorities. Lt. Gen.

Michael A.J. Fernandez, PVSM, AVSM, VSM, Commandant, OTA, Chennai, acknowledged the importance of combining advanced technological education and military training. “The introduction of structured IT and Cyber Security education within the training framework significantly enhances the professional competence of officer cadets in contemporary digital battlespace.” Prof. C. Muthamizhchelvan, Vice Chancellor, SRMIST, addressed the gathering on the occasion and emphasised the importance of the changing nature of global security, adding how digital and cyber domains are becoming increasingly relevant in defence preparedness. “The nature of conflict has moved beyond physical borders. Today, the security of India is managed as much through a computer screen as it is on the ground.

Your completion of the Diploma in Information Technology and Cyber Security is not merely an academic milestone; it is a strategic reinforcement of our national shield,” he added. The ceremony was attended by SRMIST Registrar Dr. S. Ponnusamy, Prof. A. Vinay Kumar, Pro Vice-Chancellor (FSH, Management, Law), SRMIST and senior officers from OTA. The cadets who completed the programme were awarded the Diploma certificates jointly endorsed by SRMIST.
