"Mumma na karo (Don't do it, mother)," a boy is heard saying in Punjabi in a viral video in which a woman – his mother - is seen thrashing an elderly woman, her mother-in-law. The woman pulls her mother-in-law's hair, slaps, hits and abuses her, ignoring the child's pleading. The boy, who recorded the assault on his phone, claimed that this was a regular occurrence at his home in Punjab's Gurdaspur.
The viral video starts with the mother, Harjeet Kaur, dragging her mother-in-law Gurbajan Kaur by her hair. When her son begs her to let go of his grandmother, she does so but keeps raining blows and expletives on her.
"Tu kutti aa (Are you a bi**h?)" Harjeet Kaur asks her mother-in-law, pushing her to the couch.
Harjeet Kaur is seen picking up a steel glass and hitting Gurbajan Kaur twice before slamming it to the ground.
After an argument, Harjeet Kaur once again pushes her mother-in-law. Using her leg, Gurbajan Kaur desperately tries to push away her daughter-in-law, who grabs the leg and slaps the elderly woman twice.
Gurbajan Kaur lets out a loud cry.
The incident reportedly took place on Sunday, when Harjeet Kaur caught her mother-in-law recording her assault.
In her complaint to the police, Gurbajan Kaur, a widow, alleged that Harjeet was pressuring her to transfer all her property to her.
Her grandson Charatveer Singh told the police that his mother often beat and abused his grandmother when drunk. He also claimed that his mother beat him and his father too.
When Charatveer went to the police with his video, he was asked why he didn't intervene instead of recording the assault.
"I recorded the incident on camera as proof. My mother once filed a complaint against me as well and has threatened to take revenge and repeat her actions," he added.
Gurbajan Kaur alleges that her daughter had a “long history of physical assault”, often recorded by her grandson. In one of the videos shared by Charatveer, Harjeet Kaur is seen hitting her husband with a slipper. In another video, Charatveer appears to have been locked up by his mother, allegedly to keep him away from his grandmother.
The police have issued a warning to Harjeet Kaur.
