The Northern Railway (NR) suspended all train operations evening on the Haridwar-Dehradun route as a big boulder fell on the track due to landslide.

"Since Railways had already made a canopy so no major damage took place. No injury or casualty has been reported. Restoration work has already started and section officers are at the site," Himanshu Upadhyay, Chief Public Relation Officer, Northern Railway said.

The NR issued a notification for short termination of three Dehradun-bound trains at Haridwar. These trains are 12369, 12370 and 12055.

A car, with people trapped inside, was swept away in the devastating flash floods triggered by a powerful cloubdurst in Uttarakhand on Tuesday, showed a dramatic video. 

"Woh dekho gaadi (See that car)," screamed a man as the car was bobbing away on the muddy sludge, like corks on a wave. 

"Aadmi pura bhara hua hai, aadmi hai isme, aadmi hai (The car is filled with people. There are people inside)," said another, as seen on the video. 

It is not known what happened to the car as the video cuts off after 30 seconds, with the car still being carried away.

The Indian Air Force is on high alert and ready to join the ongoing rescue operations in Uttarakhand being carried out by the Indian Army, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

IAF sources confirmed to IANS that helicopters from three major airbases - Chandigarh, Sarsawa, and Bareilly - have been placed on standby for aerial rescue and supply missions.

The assets include two Chinooks, two Mi-17V5s, two Cheetahs, and one Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH), said an IAF official on the condition of anonymity.

Adverse weather conditions over the higher reaches of Uttarakhand have so far hampered air operations.

At least eight Indian Army soldiers are reported missing in the lower Harsil area from a camp, ANI reported. This comes even as the Army is continuing relief and rescue operations in full swing in flood-hit areas of Uttarkashi district.

The weather body has issued a red alert, forecasting heavy rains, in Uttarakhand till Wednesday.

Visuals from this afternoon showed flood fury in Dharali village, as waters swept away houses and cars, even as locals feared occupants were trapped inside inundated buildings.

Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi called the reported disappearance of people and destruction caused in the Uttarkashi flash floods is "extremely sad and worrying".

He also appealed to the authorities to "speed up relief and rescue operations".

The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert warning for Uttarakhand's Dharali, saying it had recorded "extremely heavy" rainfall of around 21 centimetres.

Deadly floods and landslides are common during the monsoon season from June to September, but experts say climate change, coupled with urbanisation, is increasing their frequency and severity.

The UN's World Meteorological Organization said last year that increasingly intense floods and droughts are a "distress signal" of what is to come as climate change makes the planet's water cycle ever more unpredictable.

At least four people have died and several are feared trapped under debris after a powerful cloudburst struck the Dharali area near Harsil in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district on Tuesday afternoon, triggering flash floods.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah directed the deployment of rescue teams from both the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to the cloudburst-affected area. Three ITBP teams have already been dispatched, while four NDRF teams are enroute and expected to join the rescue operations shortly.

NDRF told ANI that it's three teams-- one each from Manera, Batkot and Dehradun-- have been dispatched at the cloudburst site in Uttarkashi. "Further, two teams are in readiness at Shashtradhar airstrip for airlift."

Meanwhile, ITBP told ANI that its 16-member team has arrived at the cloudburst site in Uttarkashi to assist in rescue operations, and another team of its 12th Battalion has also been rushed from Matli in Uttarakhand.

Indian Army's Central Command shared visuals of a mudslide near Harsil in Uttarakhand, which showed houses being buried under a surge of mud.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences for the lives lost in the Uttarakhand flash floods, while assuring that rescue and relief teams are working to assist people.
